Message	I had the same mindset as you with regards to "a belt is a belt", (but for me this was an accessory belt). I had to replace an alternator belt for my J30, so I stopped by PepBoys and picked a Gates alt. belt (pretty sure its Gates), verified the part number matched with his computer b/c I've been given the wrong parts before, and I installed it correctly. The belt didn't seem to seat right on both pullies, therefore not making enough contact with the alt. pulley making my battery die. It also tore up the belt several days later leaving little fine belt particles in the engine bay. So I had an extra OEM belt from my Z lying around, installed that, problem solved and perfect to this day. Moral -> In most cases, OEM quality can't be replicated
